Cross rivers and traverse the jungles of southern Kalimantan to reach remote tribal villages and natural wildlife sanctuaries on this immersive Indonesia tour.

Setting off from Balikpapan in southern Kalimantan island- also known as Borneo - you'll travel by boat along the Mahakam River for five days spotting exotic wildlife and going ashore for an overnight stay in a longhouse to discover a way of life untouched by time.

Tour Itinerary

Upon arrival at Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan, your guide and car/driver will meet you and transfer you to the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan.

You’ll board a wooden house-boat and depart for an amazing overnight cruise on the Mahakam River. The river flows from the highlands, down through a gorge and then out into the Makassar Strait.

Dinner is served onboard and you will sleep in cabins on the boat.

Today you will visit several villages as you make your way to the village of Tanjung Isuy for an overnight stay in a traditional longhouse.

After breakfast on the boat, you will observe the traditional lifestyle of the riverside villages and visit the local market at Muara Muntai. Then take a motorized canoe across the Jempang Lake and along the Ohong River to reach Mancong Village. As you cross the Ohong, keep your eyes open for the proboscis monkeys, macaque, monitor lizards and kingfishers that inhabit the shoreline.

On arrival at Mancong village you will be greeted with a welcome ceremony performed by the Dayak Banuaq tribe in front of their long houses. Then return to Tanjung Isuy for your overnight stay in a traditional longhouse. A local-style dinner will be served this evening.

Early this morning, after breakfast, return to your houseboat and resume the cruise downstream to Melak. During the cruise, the boat will stop at Minta Village where you will observe the way of life of the Kutai people and observe the process of making brown sugar. Lunch and dinner are served onboard.

Today you will take a fascinating half day excursion overland to the Eheng Village.

You’ll be transferred to shore where a car is waiting to transfer you through the jungle to Eheng Village. The village is home to the Dayak Tribes, with a wealth of ecological and cultural treasures that survive deep within the rainforest jungle of Indonesia’s largest island.

Spending the morning in the village, you will get to experience the incredible culture, where village elders practice traditional medicine and mark their status with intricate body tattoos and remarkably heavy ear adornments. The friendly villagers will welcome you into their traditional longhouses and are eager to share with you the customs and rituals of their people.

After your village visit, continue through the forest where you will see mysterious black orchids and huge, iron wood trees.

Return to the house boat for lunch and the cruise downstream to Lekak Kidau. Dinner will be served onboard this evening.

This morning after breakfast you’ll disembark for a tour of Lekak Kidau village. The people here are from the Dayak Kenyah Tribe whose women are known for their elongated ear lobes and tattoos.

Continue downriver with a short stop at Tenggarong, a village home to former Sultan’s palace which is now a museum.

Lunch will be served onboard.

The final stretch of your downstream journey takes you to Loa Janan where you will disembark and proceed by road to Balikpapan, a resource-rich region well known for its timber, mining and petroleum export products.

Check in to your hotel in Balikpapan, and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
