Mount Ramelau Summit Hike | Highest Peak on Timor Leste

Timor LesteHike and Trek

Dili • Aileu • Maubisse • Hato Builiko • Summit of Mt. Ramelau

Mt. Tatamailau, or Mt. Ramelau as it is commonly called, at 2,963m, is the highest mountain in East Timor and home to the Mambai people. Since 1975 it has provided a sanctuary for East Timorese resistance and is considered, like the men and women it protects, to be indestructible. After the referendum in 1999, the people of Hato Builiko fled into hiding on Ramelau's upper slopes, while below, the departing militia destroyed their homes.

We also have a 5-day Mt. Ramelau programme which works well with Tuesday to Saturday flights.

Continue the journey through picturesque countryside to the next main town, Maubessi. The traditional houses, called Umalulik (cone shaped built with bamboo or mud) can be spotted throughout the drive. We will stop at Poussada de Maubesse, a former Portuguese rest house for lunch.

As we drive up the mountain ranges to Hato Builiko, the landscape changes dramatically and temperature can drop drastically overnight.

Rise early to trek to the summit in time to see the spectacular sunrise. A Statue of Virgin Mary, measuring 3m high, was erected here by the Catholic Church during the years of Indonesian occupation.

We descend to the guest house for breakfast and return to Dili with a stop at Aileu for lunch.

We expect to arrive in Dili at about 19.00 hours to check into our hotel.

  • It is most important to be flexible, stay positive and willing to accept all challenges that arise. In developing countries, particularly in remote areas, the service standards are not to be compared to the standards you are used to back home. The climb up to Ramelau is quite difficult, with the slippery rocks and landslide areas.
  • The accommodation at Hato Builico is a very simple guest house, with electricity being available from 07.00pm to 12.00mn; please expect simple dishes to be served at dinner at the guesthouse.
